NLS8 - David sets a new Nurburgring Lap Record!

After the disappointments of the previous races, the team were back to try and finish off the NLS season and the M6 era with a strong result. Cool but dry weather greeted the teams for the weekend making it ideal conditions for the Yokohama Walkenhorst M6s.

However the Eifel weather had a twist for all the entrants as qualifying was delayed by 90mins due to fog on the track before David could hit the track first for the #34 car.

“It was one of the clearest qualifying laps I think I’ve ever had, and with the track conditions the way they were, I was flying. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete the lap at full pace, but my effort was still good enough for P1 at the time. We were then beaten by a few other cars and ended up P5, but still in a good place for the race”

David would again start the car, and quickly moved the #34 car into P2 after turn1 and set about carefully bringing in the tyres to avoid any tyre incidents like in previous races. Leaving a gap to P1, and comfortably ahead of P3, David then pushed on lap2 and set a new race lap record for the NLS championship and the Nurburgring of a 07:53.202, 2.8 seconds faster than the previous record.

David then continued to close the gap to P1 over the next lap and a half, before another disaster struck and David got another puncture while going down the foxhole. Luckily he was warned with enough time by the onboard tyre pressure monitoring system, but had to limp the car back over 15km to the pits loosing over 10mins to the leaders. Ben Tuck would take over to conduct a tyre test before the car was retired.

“We discussed that the conditions were perfect for a lap record attempt today and we set it up perfectly to achieve one of our goals for the race. Holding any lap record at the Nurburgring is special so I’m super happy to have it on my CV. Unfortunately I wasn’t fully confident we had solved our issues from last race, so ½ expected something like this to happen. However I am super pleased with my personal performances in quali, the race and the lap record so I could take some positives from another disappointing result.”
