The postponed final round of the 2020 IGTC championship would take place in mid December at the Kyalami Race track in South Africa. It was an impressive feat to host the race in the pandemic to complete the championship, and even though there wasn’t the largest of grids, the quality of the grid was incredibly high. David would again be lining up with season long BMW Factory drivers DTM champion Martin Tomcyzk and China GT Champion Nick Yelloly.
During the combined qualifying session, David, Martin & Nick were able to make the superpole session, joining the sister car, meaning BMW were the only manufacture to have 2 cars in the shootout. David was nominated for his first superpole session where he was able to qualify the #35 car in P6 for the start of the 9hrs.
Martin started the car, and made a fantastic start to move up into P4, and ran in the top 5 at the end of the first 2hours. The #35 car would stay in touch with the leaders in P7 for the first 6hours with the help of safety cars, however a lack of ultimate pace under green flag running, meant that the car slipped off the lead lap with 3hours to go. With the #34 car winning the race and the #35 car finishing up P6, the combination helped score points so that BMW were able to secure P2 in the IGTC Manufacturers championship.
“To finish off the year with the success the team and BMW had was mega! Congratulations to BMW, Nicky and Augusto for securing the championship this year! The weekend was up and down, we lost some track time Thursday, we bounced back and did a great job in quali to put the car P6 in the shootout, Martin made a great start, however we didn’t have the pace under green flag running, but we endured the race to finish where we needed to be to give BMW the best position in the manufactures championship!”
